Uruguay causes big shock at 2019 Rugby World Cup
On the previous World Cup tournament, Uruguay had only four full pro’s in their squad. They lost all there matches that tournament, with a 47-15 defeat against Fiji being one on those matches. Now, four years later, the rugby amateurs of Uruguay surprised everyone by beating Fijj with 30 to 27.
After the match a very emotional Juan Manuel Gaminara, captain of the Uruguayan rugby team, spoke to the press. He said: “I’m convinced a lot of people didn’t even know Uruguay has a rugby team. We are amateurs and we play against fulltime professionals. They can focus completely on the sport, while we’re in a different situation.”
This victory over Fiji is Uruguay’s first World Cup victory since beating Georgia in 2003. Uruguay started this match in great fashion which led to a 24-12 lead at halftime. Fiji manage to come closer in the second half, but it was just enough for Uruguay to win this match with 3 points. This result brings Uruguay to the third place in the group, behind Wales and Australia. It’s going to be very interesting to see if this was just a lucky shot, or if Uruguay is able to keep surprising everyone.
